Congratulations to the Crew and cast of Black Panther, a record breaking superhero film. Disney announced that Black Panther will be available digitally on May 8 and on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on May 15. The home release will wrap up the film’s historic box-office run: As of this weekend, the Marvel film has earned $665 million, surpassing Titanic as the third-highest-grossing movie in U.S. history.
I have finally gotten the chance to watch Black Panther fully without any distractions. Before watching it, many critics have somehow praised the character Killmonger and some even applauded his actions.
No doubt we can praise Michael B Jordan performance but the character Killmonger I can’t and here’s why
Nakia vrs Killmonger (The Vision and the Mission)
Nakia had the same vision Killmonger and his father N’ Jobu had, but unlike them ” Killmonger and N’jobu “, Nakia didn’t go extreme, nor betrayed Wakanda, and the peoples trust. Nakia was out there fighting for the weak, helping in every way she can, she didn’t have to steal vibranium.
Aside Nakia tireless efforts to convince Okoye and T’Challa that wakanda can help others while protecting itself she didn’t grow bitter like Killmonger and N’jobu nor did she used force. She was convincing and maintaining a healthy dialogue with T’Challa and Okoye
N’Jobu to T’Chaka : I observed for as long as I could. Their leaders have been assassinated. Communities flooded with drugs and weapons. They are overly policed and incarcerated. All over the planet, our people suffer because they don’t have the tools to fight back. With vibranium weapons they can overthrow all countries, and Wakanda can rule them all, the right way!
N’Jobu statement here clearly indicated he was going extreme,he grow bitter. Note, used the words ” They are overly policed and incarcerated. All over the planet, our people suffer because they don’t have the tools to fight back ”
Instead of preaching peace and working towards it using dialogue and technology, N’jobu was rather of the view that ” Our” ” people needed tools to fight back”
Lets question ourselves, ” Does fighting solve our problems ” ? N’jobu sounded like a notorious Warlord or drug dealer and not like a prince/ future king.
N’jobu continued, ” With vibranium weapons they can overthrow all countries, and Wakanda can rule them all, the right way!”
Here N’jobu sounded like a dictator or colonial master. The words “Rule them all”, ” Overthrow all countries” was totally wrong, extreme and too ambitious.
“Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely definition. An observation that a person’s sense of morality lessens as his or her power increases. The statement was made by Lord Acton, a British historian of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries”
The reason we dialogue is that not everyone can fight, majority suffer during we times and the consequences of war is far far greater than its benefits.
What Killmonger and N’jobu were preaching is, if Africa/ Black’s finally land a chance to colonize and rule over the Whites/Europe/Asia they should go ahead.
Wakanda and Helping Other’s
Nakia told T’Challa that ” Wakanda is strong enough to help others and defend itself ”
Yes Nakia is right but my question is “How do we do it, how do we begin, where do we start, with whom do we start with”
I have watched developed countries struggle with refugees and maintain security at the same time. There are always bad nuts among the plenty good nuts. In helping others I wouldn’t want to endanger my people.
Remember a piece of vibranium in the wrong hands can cause unimaginable damage. So to protect the vibranium, protect Wakanda and the people and help others, not only time will be needed but a plan and a systematic approach should and must be followed. And how can this be achieved? Let’s recall the wise words of king T’chaka to T’Challa when he asked his father how to be a great king and best protect Wakanda
” You need to surround yourself with the people you trust ”
Killmonger And his Selfish Ambitions
After defeating T’Challa in the ritual battle and went on kill Zuri, which was unnecessary, why burn the heart shaped herb? Didn’t he know that future generations of Wakanda would need it, didn’t he see himself as a future father and king and his son could succeed him?
Killmonger was selfish, he didn’t have Wakanda at heart, he was self-centered and greedy. Being born into the royal family doesn’t mean you can be a good king.
Yes he had a rough childhood, but that’s not an excuse to his bad behavior. Oprah had a rough childhood but that didn’t make her bitter and selfish. Iron Man had a rough childhood, Captain America also had same, so Killmonger has no excuse.
Its fair to say we don’t have control over what happens to us, but we have the control over how it affects us.
Okoye and W’Kabi (Loyalty and Trust)
When confronted by Nakia, Okoye said, I’m loyal to that throne, no matter who sits on it. I serve my country and Nakia replied ” I save my country ”
Unlike Okoye, W’Kabi was loyal to the throne but didn’t trust if T’Challa as a king. And what made things worse was when T’Challa failed to bring Ulysses Klaue home as promised and Killmonger did.
W’Kabi is of the believe that both King T’Chaka and T’Challa have failed the people of Wakanda because they couldn’t bring Ulysses Klaue to justice.
FYI, W’Kabi wanted revenge on Ulysses Klaue because during Ulysses Klaue attack on the borders of Wakanda, Ulysses killed his parents
But for W’Kabi to watch two blood brothers kill each other, was cruel and a question mark was placed on his loyalty.
Okoye was ready to serve Killmonger because he didn’t only win the ritual battle but was a royal blood. Nevertheless Okoye couldn’t standby and watch Killmonger kill T’Challa for no tangible reason. Whereas W’Kabi didn’t just stood by and watch but picked a stranger “Killmonger” side
Which meant T’Challa friendship to he”W’Kabi ” over the year’s means nothing. And he would watch and fight side by side with Killmonger to kill T’Challa because T’Challa and T’Chaka failed to bring his parents killer “Ulysses Klaue to justice.
T’Challa is a ” Good man and a Good King ”
When King T’Chaka told T’Challa that ” You are good man with a good heart, but it’s hard to be good man and a good king ”
T’Chaka didn’t mean its impossible, he just meant it hard not impossible. So when T’Challa badly injured Killmonger and even granted Killmonger wish by taking him out to see the sun, T’Challa gave Killmonger a chance to live/survive but Killmonger refused.
T’Challa: We can still heal you…
Erik Killmonger: Why, so you can lock me up? Nah. Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, ’cause they knew death was better than bondage.
Why did Killmonger refused, maybe because unlike Captain America buddy ” Bucky” Killmonger couldn’t face his own gilt and dying was far better.
Moreover before Killmonger death, T’Challa blamed his father King T’Chaka for abandoning little Killmonger. Besides T’Chaka didn’t kill N’jobu for no reason, N’jobu was the one who pointed a gun at him, in an attempt to shoot. So basically we can’t entirely blame King T’Chaka for N’jobu death but for abandoning little Killmonger, king T’Chaka was wrong and T’Challa is trying to write his father’s wrong by using the neighborhood N’jobu and Killmonger lived in to build a Wakanda Museum.
